Tea is one of those simple luxuries that can easily slip into an exercise in mindless convenience.
I am the first to admit that I often want to skip the fanfare surrounding a properly brewed cup of tea.
It is inconvenient, slow, and seemingly a hassle when there are other other tasks begging for your attention.
Which is exactly why we should take the time to do it.
Enter Plum Deluxe: an organic, loose leaf tea company from Portland, OR. It was created by Andy Hayes, with whom I had the pleasure of recently interviewing for my co-hosted podcast Nourish + Flourish.*
We talked tea, of course, but also delved into the inspiring story, community, and mission behind these beautiful loose leaf blends.
Andy and I unfortunately share a common denominator of cancer touching our lives, but his mother’s legacy and the lessons she imparted following her diagnosis have shaped the way his company came to be.
Without spoiling our upcoming episode, I wanted to share a few points that Andy made.
Properly brewing loose leaf tea is a process that takes time, patience, and care. That process can be a portal to mindfulness, which is what Andy (and Plum Deluxe) is all about.
The ritual presents an easily accessible moment where the chaotic nature of everyday life can slip into a more intentional space. Putting life on pause as you make a beautiful cup of tea invites in an awareness of simplicity and cultivates a nourishing sense of calm.
From a seat of mindful awareness we can tap into our inner landscape and start clearing out some of the unnecessary or cumbersome junk that may be hanging around our consciousness.
It may seem like a tall order for a mere cup of tea, but allowing the process to be your only focus for a few precious minutes could be the simple meditation you need to shift your perspective.
Why loose leaf over bags?
Dunking a teabag up and down into a steaming mug can be a hypnotic, pleasant moment, but have you ever stopped to think about how you can’t see what’s inside those cloudy bags?
Loose leaf blends grab your attention at first glance, which Andy explained is a highly intentional part of his tea development.
Andy graciously sent me three Plum Deluxe blends to try, and I couldn’t help but feel inspired to showcase their beauty. Before our chat, I never thought to include tea in my pursuit of “eating with your eyes first,” but it totally makes sense.
Starting with visually stunning tea puts you on the fast track to mindfulness.
Check out these magical teas from Plum Deluxe:
- ‘Vista Blend’ Herbal Tea – apricot + lavender
- Reading Nook Blend Black Tea – rose + lavender + chamomile
- Tea Break White Tea – tangerine + honeydew melon
The Reading Nook Blend is my favorite of the bunch, and I put together a little video showcasing the brewing process.
The packaging on Andy’s teas also include a few lines that encourage those mindful moments that matter.
Here’s what the Reading Nook Blend says:
A blend of joy.
Pairs with creativity, reading & writing, conversation, relaxing.
Don’t mind if I do.
